Born on the 19th of April 1981 at Karoi Hospital. Fortunate Matenga a.k.a Sister Flame is the 1st born child in a family of five children, 3 girls and 2 boys.

Raised in Bulawayo the 2nd largest city in Zimbabwe, she attended Robert Tredgold Primary School and went to St Columbus High School for her secondary education. Her music career started when she was 10years old but didn’t take it seriously, she enjoyed dancing more and she became popular because of her dancing.  She joined a drama group called B.U.W.A.C which was promoting theater, songs and dancing. She later on worked with groups such as Savuka Dance Company where her love for singing was awoken.

At school she joined the school choir and was also part of the drama club. She entered all the school singing competitions, and loved singing at the school prize giving ceremonies. When she finished her high school she joined her 1st live band group called Amigos as a backing and leading vocalist. It was such an experience because she learned a lot about singing in key and listening to other musicians’ advice. Later the same year she started her own group with some of the Amigos players called Afro base.  She was now working at the Matopo Rock Motel where she doubled as a receptionist and singer by night. They were the opening act for the main act every Friday to Sunday. Since they had a few original songs they started to sing copyright songs from jazz to hip-hop. That is where Albert Nyathi spotted her and liked her style of singing.

She moved from Bulawayo to Harare to join Albert Nyathi and Imbongi. It was such a big step for her because she was doing what she loved professionally. Later the same year she moved to join Andy Brown and the Storm where she was a backing vocalist for both Andy Brown and Chiwoniso Maraire. After 2 years with the band she was allowed to be the opening act for the Storm singing her own songs and some copy right songs. In 2003 she was part of an all female group which was called Ruvhuvhuto Sisters with Ivy Kombo, Jackie Madondo and Plaxedes Wenyika.

In 2005 Flame recorded her 1st album The Road with TMC and was nominated for best female Urban Grooves artist. The album did very well and it was played extensively on local radio stations. These songs were received well by the public- The One, Unity, Muzukuru and I Know Jah Rules featuring the late Culture Tee. She has performed at many functions and festivals with and without a live band. In 2011 Sister Flame finally released her second album titled The Flame of House which is currently being played on all local radio stations in Zimbabwe as well as a few stations in South Africa. Flame has tackled the genre of house very well and has come up with 6 earth shaking beats harmoniously blended with powerful soul touching vocals.

Now Flame has her own record label called Fotiana Records. The Flame of House is the first house album by a Zimbabwean Female Artist. More recently in 2016 she has just completed her 3rd project called Love Sweat and Tears, a reggae mix tape. The single Muzik is My Life from this mix tape is available online on Sound Cloud and Reverb Nation and is being well received. Flame intends to continue making a mark on the music industry at home and abroad by creating her own sound and raising the bar and standards of Zimbabwean music.
